Italian Basketball, a brief introduction

Mens Sana Siena

Good afternoon,

surprisingly enough in Italy we have a good basketball championship, and today I’d like to do a little introduction about it.

Other than our international basketball stars, I mean Bargnani, Gallinari and Bellinelli who play in the NBA, there is life on the Italian planet of basketball.

Like every main  European team sport our league is structured on many series, the most important of all is the League A, where teams fight to get the title of “Italian champions”. This year there are 17 teams, they used to be 16, they play twice against each other team and in the end the 8 with the best record play the play off.

In the last five years a team has become the absolute leader winning 5 title in a row, and being the favourite this year too, Siena. One can think that our championship is boring because of this dictatorship of the Tuscan team, but especially this year this is not true. We have tough fights every week, and there isn’t a big difference between most of the teams, although Siena seems to be of another planet, they already lost 5 games since the beginning of the season, giving to other fans (at the least an illusion) to fight for the title.

Other strong and popular teams are Milano and Cantù, the first one is the most titled Italian team, even if they hasn’t won anything since many years, they are now facing a huge renovation of the team with a lot of new players bought, and a new trainer, the well-known Scariolo (2 times European champion with Spain national team, and many other things). Cantù is a really small town in Lombardy but with a big history and a big passion for basket, they’ve recently built a really competitive team, that plays a good basket.

I have to mention Bologna, once called basket city and Avellino which host one of the most funny team of all.

If you have the chance and you like to, today are scheduled 2 matches which involve Italian teams, Malaga-Siena and Cantù-Maccabi Tel Aviv for the Euroleague tournament, a league where the strongest European teams play.

They are in a very different situation, Siena is leading their opponents, while Cantù is facing one of the most skilful European team, both are interesting matches and one can see playing some of the most interesting European basket.

That’s all for today, see you next time for other Italian basket news.
